About Great Barrier Reef
The world's largest living structure visible from space, where families snorkel through rainbow-colored coral gardens teeming with tropical marine life.
The Great Barrier Reef began forming about 500,000 years ago, built by billions of tiny coral polyps over countless generations. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the world's largest coral reef system, stretching over 1,400 miles along Australia's northeast coast - longer than the Great Wall of China! Indigenous Australian peoples, particularly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups, have cultural connections to the reef going back over 40,000 years. The reef is actually made up of 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands! It's so vast it can be seen from outer space - the only living structure visible from there. The reef supports incredible biodiversity - over 1,500 species of fish, 411 types of hard coral, and countless other creatures including sea turtles, dolphins, and whales. Families snorkel or take glass-bottom boats through this underwater wonderland, experiencing nature's most colorful ecosystem. The reef teaches children about marine biology, coral ecosystems, and why conservation matters!

Traveler Stories (1)
Great Barrier Reef day trip from Cairns with kids
We chose a pontoon day trip over a small boat because of sea sickness and it was the right call. Glass bottom boat, semi-submersible and snorkelling all in one day. Our nine year old lasted two hours in the water and still talks about the giant clams.
💡 Travel Tips
- •Rash vests are provided but sizes run out early - grab them first
- •Take the seasickness tablets an hour before boarding
- •Reef-safe sunscreen only, and reapply after every swim
