About Lima
Peru's coastal capital gateway combines pre-Incan history, Spanish colonial splendor, and world-renowned cuisine with Pacific Ocean cliffs.
Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535 on lands inhabited by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Nearby sites like Pachacamac were sacred centers long before the Incas. Lima became the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, the most important Spanish colony in South America, making it incredibly wealthy and powerful for three centuries. The city's historic center is filled with magnificent colonial churches and mansions from this golden age. After Peru's independence in 1821, Lima remained the capital. Today, it's a modern metropolis of 10 million people and the starting point for trips to Machu Picchu. Families enjoy Lima's world-class gastronomy (Peruvian food is internationally celebrated!), fascinating pre-Columbian ruins within the city, colonial architecture, ocean-view parks, and warm Peruvian hospitality. Llamas and alpacas at markets add extra charm!
