About Toronto
Canada's largest and most diverse city combines world-class attractions, multicultural neighborhoods, and the iconic CN Tower overlooking Lake Ontario.
Toronto's name comes from an Indigenous word meaning 'where there are trees standing in the water.' The area was an important meeting place for Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. European settlement began in the late 1700s when the British founded the town of York, which was renamed Toronto in 1834. The city grew steadily but exploded in population after World War II, becoming Canada's economic and cultural capital. Toronto is now one of the world's most multicultural cities with over 140 languages spoken! Half of Toronto's residents were born outside Canada, creating an incredibly diverse, welcoming atmosphere. Families enjoy the city's safety, cleanliness, amazing food from every culture, festivals year-round, and proximity to Niagara Falls. From the towering CN Tower to waterfront beaches, Toronto offers urban excitement and natural beauty in perfect Canadian balance!
