About Fiordland & Milford Sound
Dramatic fjords carved by glaciers plunge into the sea, where waterfalls cascade thousands of feet and dolphins play in pristine waters.
Fiordland was carved by massive glaciers during ice ages over the past 2 million years, creating dramatic U-shaped valleys that filled with seawater as glaciers retreated. MΔori knew these lands for centuries, with legends saying the demigod Tu-te-raki-whanoa carved the fjords with his magical adze. British explorer Captain Cook visited Fiordland in 1773, and it remained largely unexplored wilderness until the 20th century. Milford Sound, called 'Piopiotahi' in MΔori, is often called the 'eighth wonder of the world' - Rudyard Kipling called it the 'eighth wonder' in 1904! The fjord is dominated by Mitre Peak rising 5,560 feet straight from the water. This is one of the wettest places on Earth, receiving over 20 feet of rain annually, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls after storms. Families cruise past towering cliffs, see seals basking on rocks, spot dolphins, and feel spray from waterfalls. Fiordland teaches about glacier power and pristine wilderness!
